Australian Shepherds are a highly energetic and people-oriented breed, and it’s important for prospective owners to understand both their physical and emotional needs. These dogs thrive in active environments and love the freedom of open spaces where they can run, play, and engage their minds. While it is possible to raise an Aussie in an apartment or smaller home, it requires a strong commitment to providing at least two to three hours of daily exercise through walks, playtime, training, or structured activities. Without enough stimulation, Aussies can become bored, restless, and may develop unwanted behaviors such as excessive barking or destructive habits.

Regular outings like trips to dog parks, outdoor adventures, or even using tools like dog treadmills can make a big difference in keeping them happy and balanced. Just as important as exercise is their deep need for companionship. Australian Shepherds are often called “velcro dogs” because they form strong bonds and want to be close to their people at all times. It’s not unusual for them to follow their owners from room to room, simply wanting to be part of whatever is happening.

Because they are so intelligent, Aussies can absolutely be trained to settle in a designated spot or practice independence. However, at their core, they are loyal, devoted companions who do best in homes where they are included as an active and constant part of daily life.
